World War Z is an action game where you fight zombies and can connect with online players. There are several scenarios to play through and you can choose from four characters for each campaign. Each campaign has different missions like fighting through dozens of zombies or escorting a scientist who is working on a cure.

Missions and Campaigns

World War Z gives you four different campaigns to choose from. While the characters you choose are the same for every campaign, the campaigns themselves are disconnected from each other. They each have their own insular story. There will be a beginning, middle and satisfying end to each one. Each campaign takes close to an hour and it's nice to have a story that wraps up so quickly.

The campaign is split into several parts and with distinct goals. Usually the first part will just be about surviving and getting through several waves of zombies. The following missions are usually about escorting someone important or protecting defenseless survivors as they try to escape incoming zombies. Each campaign takes place in a different area of the world like Japan or New York.

Just like there are four campaigns, there are also four distinct characters that you can choose from. Each one has a different personality and lines that they say throughout the campaign. There are no other discernible differences between them, so you don't have to worry about one character being stronger or weaker than the others. As the story progresses you'll learn more about your character's motivations and story. You will also get character-specific cutscenes after the campaign.

Shooting and Aiming

A key part of this game is defeating any zombies that are trying to kill you. There are numerous weapons you can pick up and choose from as you advance. You can choose from automatic weapons, shotguns, pistols and more. Each weapon has distinct characteristics and ranges. You'll find that aiming and shooting all of them is easy and you'll have no problem taking care of the incoming zombies.

Online Play

World War Z depends on online play. While you can play offline and the computer can control the other survivors with you, it's much better if human players are there with you. There are several online-specific modes, or you can play the campaigns and have your friends there with you. This allows you to create elaborate strategies to defeat zombies, save survivors and complete missions.

There's also a competitive mode where you can go against four other survivors and treat to beat each other. This is a fun mode where you can see who the best player is. Some maps will just feature you and the other team while other maps will have zombies coming after you as well.
